Bataan First District Rep. Geraldine Roman, the first transgender person elected to the Congress of the Philippines, expressed her admiration for Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte for her unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ rights in Quezon City.

In her Facebook Page post on Monday, Roman congratulated Belmonte for the launch of the Right to Care card, a program that aims to provide free access to health care and other services for LGBTQ+ individuals in the city.

“Kudos to QC Mayor Joy Belmonte for her unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ rights in Quezon City! Under her leadership, the launch of the Right to Care card marks a significant step towards an inclusive society,” Roman wrote.

Congresswoman Roman, now on her third term, is also the chair of the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality, has been a vocal advocate for the passage of the anti-discrimination bill on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression (SOGIE), which seeks to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in various sectors.

She has also filed bills regarding eco-tourism, livelihood enhancements, agriculture advancements, health, and education, which are focused on the first district of Bataan. Roman was named as one of the 100 Leading Global Thinkers of 2016 by US-based Foreign Policy magazine and one of “13 Inspiring Women of 2016” by Time magazine.
